Hom Mali, Thailand's famous Jasmine Rice
If you visit any Thai restaurant in Europe quite certainly they will serve you Jasmine rice, or "Hom Mali" how the Thais call it. This variety is unique for Thailand and I agree with them, that it's taste does just beat every other rice.
So it does not come as a surprise that with around 7 Million tones annually Thailand is the world's larges rice exporter, even rice is not the main export item here.
Between the two harvests per year is plenty of time for the rice to be stored in large silos under tropical high humidity conditions. To make this work prior to storage the rice has to be hot air dried to reach the exactly defined moisture required for storage.
Larger plants consist of several such rice dryers connected with a system of conveyors where air flow, air temperature and material (rice) flow have to be controlled in order to get the rice from the right source silo into the right target silo with the right moisture.
Recently ITS had the chance to completely automate such a system applying 2005 master stations, 2003 CAN I/O slaves, lots of remote panels and 5 SCADA stations, counting all in all over 4,500 I/O.
So the next time you go to eat Thai food please taste the difference of Jasmine rice and keep in mind that B&R could have been involved in the process . . .
