Plug&Play GPRS RTU

February 2005

Example: AB Micro MT-101 GPRS Remote Terminal Unit

GPRS in General

GPRS services are available from all major mobile network operators (AIS, DTAC, Orange) and served by the same transmitter stations as GSM.

GPRS data services were initially introduced to connect advanced mobile phones to the internet to view information like stock exchange, currency exchange rates etc. in real-time.

But soon their value for industrial applications was discovered and they are already very popular in the US and Europe. The introduction to the Thai market was delayed by the late opening of the networks and as a result just last year the first applications did pop up. Some of the very fist successful installations were done by us, Industrial Technology Supply.

GPRS versus Radio Modem

GPRS is now quickly replacing two-way radio data communication modems for following reasons:

 - very low installation cost (no antenna towers required, no distance limitations, no frequency license)

 - low operational cost (500 THB or less per month)

 - higher signal quality, 20 times higher baud rates

 - reliable operation under bad weather conditions when radios often fail

 - redundant network layout because most locations are supplied by more than one transmitter tower

Solution 1: AB Micro MT-101 GPRS Remote Terminal Unit (see picture above)

This is a real plug-and-play solution where no additional programming is required. Installation is simple and with a few parameter settings the systems is operational and will automatically make all remote I/O points available on an OPC server in the center. Any software package with integrated OPC client, like all Scada packages e.g., can easily read and write I/O information.

AB Micro MT-101 features include on-board analog and digital I/O, data logging, logic programming and communications interface to act as gateway for any PLC, flow controller etc. with Modbus protocol.

Several such applications had been successfully installed and operated with great reliability over months at Thailand's oil & gas industry.

Technical Data:

Real time, wireless monitoring system, Modbus/OPC based Data Communications
RTU with 8 D/I, 8 D/O, 2 A/I integrated, Additional Serial Port, Data Logger
Easy configuration software, For remote online supervision of: tank levels, flows, events etc …

Solution 2: Maestro100 GPRS Terminal modem

With this modem and additional OpenAT add-on programming automatic GPRS communication can be established between any number of remote PLC's or controllers and a station in the center. The communication is fully transparent and can be based on any serial protocol or file transfer.

Eventually this solution can be more cost effective, however does require custom tailored software and intensive testing.

Technical Data:

GPRS class 10, TCP/IP Stack, Very small size: 88 x 60 x 26 mm, 5 - 32 Vdc wide input voltage (suitable for car batteries)
-15 to +60 C° operating, Voice, Fax and DATA, SMS (Thai characters enabled)

Remote Diagnosis & Programming, Remote Control, Events & Alarms
Thai Post&Telegraph Department, Type Approval Test 677(6168)/2003

Solution 3: Custom tailored integration board

If you are developing your own "black box" we can support you to GSM/GPRS enable your device with one of the following solutions:

 - TELIT TRIZIUM tri-band integration module for direct SMD mounting

 - Trizium adapter board with standard pin-out to plug on to your "black box" board

 - Trizium adapter board with DC/DC converter and RS232 interface with pins or D-Sub socket

 - or any Trizium board custom tailored to your specification

This is for sure the most cost effective solution but does require more effort and initial cost so it's viable only for certain volumes.

Technical Data TRIZIUM Integration module:

New TELIT TRIZIUM Cellular Engine for Meter Reading, GPS Devices, RTUs, Security Systems etc.

GSM Tri- Band, GPRS Class 10, BGA Package, Top-of-Class MTBF, Designed for Industrial Applications
EASY GPRS: TCP/IP Internal Stack
EASY CAMERA: direct color camera support
EASY SCAN: scanning all GSM channels
31,4 x 41.4 x 3,6 mm, 9 gr., +75°, Thai P&TD Type Approval

Similar Solutions:

SMS alarm messages to inform maintenance, operation, management or a history logger (PC) instantly about problems at plant operation. These solutions have very low installation and operation cost but can avoid much larger production losses through faster flow of information.

SMS alarm solutions are also useful for home or building security.

Solution 4: ITS GSM Alarm

With 2 D/I on-board and very simple set-up software included this solution is very easy to apply. Everyone who can connect power supply and I/O wires and who has a PC for setup can use it.

This modem can memorize up to 40 phone numbers and custom made alarm messages, also in Thai language.

When a system has an alarm contact, fault indicator etc. then the ITS GSM alarm can already be used to send SMS messages to maintenance or management in case of any problem.

This modem could also be interesting for OEM manufacturers of utility systems like air compressors etc.

Technical Data:

2 Digital Inputs (counters) integrated, Memory for 20 SMS Messages and Phone Numbers
Windows based Setup Utility, 2 SMS being sent after power loss (battery free!)
Mode 1: Digital Inputs initiate SMS messages
Mode 2: SMS selected by input pulse number
Applications:
Alarm Relay initiates SMS to Service mobile or Control Center PC
Receive pulses from micro PLC, computer or controller to select 1 out of 20 SMS Alarm Messages
OEM PCB only versions are available

Solution 5: Maestro20 GSM Terminal Modem

This solution can be applied where an intelligent controller is available, that can memorize numbers and alarm messages and send them to the modem in the form of AT commands. Most PLC types can do this and any other controller with dial-up capability.

This solution comes with even lower cost, but does need more programming work.

Solution 6: Customized Center Applications

According to your needs we develop software solutions for your system control center based on SCADA, OPC or C modules. All data can be processed, recorded, graphically displayed and exchanged with other company information systems based on data bases like Oracle etc. We supply the full solution out of one hand with many large references in successful operation since years.

Application Support:

ITS is active in the area of "Industrial Automation, Information & Networking" for over 10 years and our team of 12 engineers and programmers does understand very well this sectors need for very reliable, fast and accurate support.

Be assured, that we will solve each and every of your problems related to our solutions and that we will be with you until full implementation.

For our custom made SCADA solutions we employ already since years two programmers specialized in Delphi, C and internet related applications. Their experience proved to be very helpful for OpenAT modem programming, for development of custom made center applications and software interfaces to data base or MIS systems and also for development of the Windows based set-up program of ITS GSM alarm.
